SWIMMERS made waves with a marathon plunge at Cirencester Open Air Pool yesterday.

Seventy-two supporters dived in for a 24-hour end-of-season sponsored swim to raise money for the volunteer-run facility.

Assistant manager Adam Skill kicked off the major splash for the first 20-minute slot at noon. Regular swimmer Tony Curtis took over, followed by pool committee member Lisa Dent.

Pool manager Adam Reeves said: “I’m hoping to raise Pounds 1,000 as we’ve had such a good response.

“People are paying Pounds 1 to swim but have also got themselves sponsored, with several already raising a couple of hundred pounds. We’ve also made bacon sandwiches and are holding a barbecue, with live music and raffle.

“When it gets dark, we have some floodlights and we’ll be putting wrist glow sticks in different colours all along the rail and in the pool which should look really magical.”

Olympic silver medallist Sharron Davies signed a swimming cap for a raffle.

The Cecily Hill facility is the country’s second oldest outdoor swimming venue and soaks up Pounds 50,000 a year in day-to-day running costs.

The pool finally closes on Sunday for the season when another raffle and barbecue will be held.

Participants and spectators from across the United States will come together in Los Angeles on Sept. 3-5 for the Wii Games: Summer 2010 national championship.

As many as 90 winning teams from dozens of qualifying events held throughout the country will join six sweepstakes winners to participate in the tournament event.

According to a release, Olympic gold medalist and Dancing with the Stars champion Shawn Johnson, the official Wii Games: Summer 2010 Ambassador, will make a special appearance to lead participants in a Wii warm-up session on Sept. 3.
